Session Description:
Recent developments of spectroscopic and imaging methods have facilitated significant advances in spatial and temporal resolution in the analysis of synthetic and natural materials. Evidence reveals that many of these substances form via multiple pathways that involve the initial nucleation of particles, from complexes to nanocrystals, followed by their attachment to form crystalline products. This group of nonclassical crystal growth processes, known as Crystallization by Particle Attachment (CPA), is the consequence of interplays between kinetic and thermodynamic factors. Analyses show this type of mineralization is widespread across diverse classes of minerals and studies are now finding evidence for CPA in marine organisms. There is, however, much to be learned about nucleation and interactions between these particles, particularly during biomineralization. This session will focus on observational, experimental, and theoretical studies investigating the presence of CPA in biominerals and related materials, characterization studies, and consider the structural and chemical implications for mineralization.
