Session Description:
Advances in computing power, data services and development of continental scale geofabrics of terrain, hydrography, and the subsurface are transforming hydrologic forecasting by enabling modelling of the continuum of water flow from the atmospheres to the ocean. The National Water Center within NOAA has implemented a new National Water Model (NWM) for the U.S. with the goal of producing real-time analyses and predictions of terrestrial hydrologic conditions.  Version 1 of the NWM ingests meteorological forcing data from operational radar and operational weather prediction models to generate analyses and forecasts of gridded terrestrial hydrologic variables and river channel variables for 2.7 million river reaches.  Papers are solicited that examine forecasting skill of continental scale hydrologic models used in flood and water resources forecasting and drought management.  Examples applications of the NWM are encouraged to explore the interaction between research and operations as the NWM becomes operational in summer 2016.
