Session Description:
The study of liquids of geophysical interest is important to understanding the present state of the Earth and other planets, as well as their evolution through time. Partial melting of silicates could occur all across the mantle, in the upper mantle as well as at the core-mantle boundary, and liquid iron alloys are largely present in planetary cores. This session will be dedicated to the study of melting phenomena, partial melts and fluids. Topics will include, but are not limited to, melting curves, structural, thermo-physical and chemical properties of liquid silicates and iron alloys under high pressure, and their implications for planetary interiors. We would like to open this session to experimental work (either static or dynamic compression) and theoretical calculations on liquids and melts, as well as to seismological observations and geophysical modeling highlighting the fundamental role played by bulk liquid or partial melting in planetary interiors.
