Session Description:
Constructing accurate estimates of regional climate change impacts, particularly on water resources, remains a formidable challenge. A major and poorly understood component of these predictions is the two-way interaction between the human and Earth systems. For instance, feedbacks involving water management and land use are largely neglected in present climate modeling efforts, and work is underway to understand the magnitude of these interactions. Several recent workshops and reports have identified a need for “co-production” of knowledge simultaneously addressing the information needs of decision-makers while advancing scientific understanding. This session offers an opportunity to discuss the frameworks which must be in place to encourage dialogue between stakeholders and academics, and the technical developments which support increased interconnectedness between hydrologic, climate, and human systems. Speakers will present modelling tools which link these disparate systems, and address the challenges they encounter and opportunities they anticipate as they attempt to bridge this disciplinary divide.
