Session Description:
NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission was launched on January 31, 2015. The science data acquisition now includes just over two months of coincident active L-band and passive L-band measurements and continuing global L-band radiometry. The data has been used to estimate water cycle and climate parameters such as surface soil moisture, vegetation characteristics, ocean surface salinity and ocean surface winds. The model value-added data products also provide estimates of root-zone soil moisture and land surface water, energy and carbon fluxes. This session includes presentations on the science uses of the data with focus on understanding the water cycle and its linkages to the energy and carbon cycles over land and ocean surfaces.
