Session Description:
Several high-profile instances in recent years have brought to the forefront conversations about geoscience funding sources, conflicts of interest, and disclosure. As public funding sources become increasingly competitive, scientists and scientific societies increasingly look to private sector funding options. Under such conditions, what safeguards are needed to uphold the independence of our science, including peer review, conflict-of-interest disclosure, and public access to data? What will this mean for the direction of geoscience research? A re-examination of what constitutes independent science is needed in order to meet the challenges of current funding needs and political realities.  This conversation will open a dialogue on considerations and challenges associated with the future of communication and funding of the geoscience research enterprise.
