Session Description:
Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for life, limiting productivity in many aquatic and terrestrial systems. Despite the importance of phosphorus cycling to ecosystem function, it receives much less attention than carbon and nitrogen cycling. Since all phosphorus entering ecosystems is ultimately derived from igneous rocks, soil phosphorus cycling is a critical link between the lithosphere and the biosphere. As water availability, soil temperatures, and soil communities continue to change, rates and modes of soil phosphorus cycling will change as well, often with significant consequences for ecosystem function. This session will focus on soil phosphorus cycling in natural systems within the context of global environmental change. To highlight the diversity and commonalities of soil phosphorus cycling, we welcome submissions from around the globe. We especially encourage abstracts that use methods beyond standard soil extractions to characterize and quantify soil phosphorus cycling.
