Session Description:
Intense convection is responsible for a large fraction of high-impact weather events globally, including hail, winds, lightning, floods, and tornadoes, and often comprises much of the tail of hydrologic extremes. However, a holistic understanding of the nature of convection across the globe with implications for climate and hydrology is lacking at present. Given the societal importance of convection and related climate and hydrology implications, this session proposes to improve understanding of the physical processes, impacts, modeling, and prediction of high-impact weather for improved predictability on weather and climate timescales.  Contributions in the following areas are encouraged: 1) Observational and modeling studies of physical processes controlling convective intensity, character, and distribution around the globe, including controls from topography and the land surface; 2) Representation of convection in weather models, regional climate simulations, and GCMs; 3) Hydrological studies associated with high-impact weather, observations, and modeling; and 4) Societal impacts of high-impact weather.
