Session Description:
The LIGO Scientific Collaboration, which recently detected gravitational waves, includes over 900 scientists from 16 countries, and uses resources located around the world. It may win a Nobel Prize. How did they manage the complexity of that collaboration?
Today most scientific research projects span organizations. Accordingly, the collection of collaboration tools grows, both domain specific and generic, often resulting in barriers. Tools may not work together, leading to a frustrating end user experience. Over time, project membership changes, group's lifetimes end, and new groups are needed, all distributed across various tools. Reporting requirements increase complexity. Often, security risks are offered to ease these tensions.
These challenges have led to several approaches to provide identity management and access control across a growing variety of applications and for growing communities of users. This panel will compare and contrast the emerging options for collaboration management platforms, including open, proprietary, on-premise, and cloud choices.
