Session Description:
Geologic evidence of the conditions of early Earth is sparse, forcing our models, experiments, and ultimately interpretations of early Earth processes to be based upon limited physical evidence. As we attempt to make more from less, many of us find ourselves asking: What do we really know about early Earth? From the depths of the inner core to the atmosphere-space boundary, how has the Earth system changed? This intentionally provocative framing forces us to reexamine long-held assumptions about the evolution of climate, tectonics, and biogeochemical cycles, with implications for our understanding of life’s origins, of the future of the Earth system, and of early Earth’s suitability as an analog for exoplanet habitability. We invite contributions from the solid Earth, biogeoscience, ocean, and atmosphere communities that help reassess or reaffirm what we think we know about the early Earth system and its subsequent evolution.
