Session Description:
Multi-criteria decision making and optimization in the presence of conflicting objectives arise in a wide variety of disciplines, including earth and space science, operations research, policy allocation, and engineering. Optimization methods including evolutionary algorithms enable characterization of the optimal trade-offs among conflicting objectives (i.e., Pareto frontier). This session will explore the latest advancements in the theory of multi-criteria optimization methods and their application within real-world decision making and decision-support tools. Examples include calibration of hydrologic models, allocation of agricultural and urban policy, productivity and efficiency of operations, and design of mechanical systems, among many others. Integrated modeling frameworks that incorporate models from different disciplines (e.g., linking biophysical processes to economic activities) will be emphasized. Computational cost of integrated modeling is often high, and therefore the session invites contributions regarding meta-models and parallelizable methods. Incorporation of uncertainty and propagation of error within multi-level integrated modeling systems will also be of interest.
