Session Description:
Citizen science has gained recognition due to new technologies, the open innovation movement, and federal sponsorship. These programs are often broad in scope, and interdisciplinary in nature. They can be disruptive and go well beyond traditional arenas of outreach and education. These varied programs can have common elements, e.g. image analysis, crowd-sourced signals from social media, and geospatial visualization. Citizen science data can elucidate scientific problems at scales not otherwise tractable. Data have repeatedly been shown in multiple fields to be high quality and useful. This session focuses specifically on scientific results from these participatory programs, including published research and operational applications. These results are naturally discipline specific. However this session will provide an interdisciplinary forum for these results to be shared and discussed broadly with cross-cutting participation reaching deeper from individual disciplines to the emerging field of citizen science as well as across citizen science projects in different fields.
