Session Description:
Raising livestock requires nearly a quarter of the terrestrial land
surface for pasture and a substantial fraction of all grain produced.
While there are important provisioning and cultural services
associated with livestock production, there are serious environmental
impacts, including deforestation, land degradation, greenhouse gas
emissions, perturbed nutrient cycles, and water quality issues. This
session focuses on new field, modeling, and/or remote sensing
approaches for monitoring and assessing livestock systems in an era of
rapid environmental change. This session is intended to cover: i) monitoring
and characterization of livestock systems ii) environmental impacts of
livestock systems including pasture degradation, iii) characteristics
of mixed crop/livestock systems iv) scenario modeling and landscape
optimization v) methods for achieving improved outcomes.
