Session Description:
Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and atmospheric concentrations have been steadily growing for decades, yet large uncertainties remain on the magnitude, sources and controlling factors of emissions. In order to assess climate stabilization pathways consistent with the Paris climate agreement, improved understanding of the global N2O budget and its regular assessment are imperative. Following the successful implementation of the CO2 (annually) and CH4 (intended biannually) budget reports, the Global Carbon Project has proposed to report the global N2O budget biannually through open collaboration and synthesis activities. This session aims to bring together studies to help quantify global and regional N2O budgets through the analysis of emissions inventories, field observations, terrestrial and ocean biogeochemical modeling, and atmospheric inverse modeling. This session is expected to contribute to the development of a biannual update of the global N2O budget. Abstracts using observations and modeling at multiple spatial and temporal scales are invited.
