Developing a Carbon Roadmap to Decarbonize the World Economy by around 2050 and Build Resilient Carbon Sinks to Ensure Climate Stabilization at 1.5°C–2°C

Session Description:
Following the Paris Agreement, the world needs a carbon road map to attempt to achieve climate stabilisation at about 1.5-2°C above pre-industrial levels. Rather than accepting incremental emissions reductions, such a roadmap should create the conditions to drive exponential transitions across industrial sectors towards a world without carbon. A roadmap should provide an integrated approach to decarbonisation charting the technological innovations, policy instruments and behavioural change required. In addition, Earth system stability will likely rely on bioenergy capture and storage, and the creation of new carbon sinks on a gargantuan scale. The feasibility of such ideas is unclear, as are the unintended consequences. Large-scale trials will need to be considered soon. This session will look at the components of a chronological Global Carbon Roadmap focusing on mitigation technology, policy instruments (for example carbon tax, emissions trading schemes), behavioural change, carbon sinks and bioenergy carbon capture and storage.
