El Niño Impacts and Responses: Lessons from the 2015–2016 Event Posters

Session Description:
El Niño events create winners and losers on a global scale. Impacts of the 2015/2016 El Niño event, one of the strongest on record, ranged from floods, algal blooms, drought, wildfires and disease outbreaks in many areas, while reducing drought conditions in others, such as the Western U.S. This session will solicit cross-disciplinary contributions on the development and evolution of the 2015/2016 El Niño impacts and responses, and the extent to which science-based policy and actions improved adaptive responses. Key themes to be addressed include:

  •  Assessment of drivers and impacts in regions affected by the 2015/2016 El Niño event
  • Advances in science-based early warning information systems, including those resulting from previous events, that led to proactive risk management
  • The benefits of ongoing climate change risk management efforts in managing El Niño impacts
  • Lessons from the 2015/2016 El Niño event for integrating research, risk assessment and adaptation across the weather-climate continuum
