Understanding and Predicting Hydrobiogeochemical Responses of Terrestrial-Aquatic Ecosystems to Perturbation Posters

Session Description:
Terrestrial-aquatic interfaces are an important part of the Earth system, contributing significantly to carbon and nutrient cycling along the land-water-atmosphere continuum. These interfaces provide key ecosystem functions such as improving water quality and serving as critical habitat for a broad range of organisms. Processes occurring within terrestrial-aquatic interfaces are highly sensitive to environmental perturbation. However, current ecosystem models are not able to predict the outcome of perturbations because we lack (1) mechanistic understanding of hydro-biogeochemical processes and (2) appropriate data to inform predictive models. In this session we seek studies using novel observational and advanced modeling approaches—and especially encourage data-model integration—that help resolve knowledge gaps at all relevant scales, from pore to global, within both freshwater and marine terrestrial-aquatic interfaces. This session will deepen our understanding of perturbation impacts and key feedbacks within coupled hydro-biogeochemical systems along the terrestrial-aquatic continuum that will ultimately reduce uncertainties in ecosystem model predictions.
