Session Description:
Water scarcity threatens the sustainability of agricultural production worldwide. This problem is exacerbated not only by climate change, drought, and contamination of water resources, but also by long-term mismanagement of surface and groundwater in many areas. Addressing the grand challenge of sustaining food and fiber for a growing human population demands interdisciplinary studies that assess farmers’ adaptation strategies, quantify potential impacts of water use on ecosystems, and identify new solutions for optimized crop management. This session focuses on use-inspired research that integrates across multiple disciplines (e.g., the physical sciences, social sciences, and engineering) and explicitly includes a focus on transferring new knowledge into bottom-up (i.e., farm level) or top-down (i.e., policy) solutions. It includes studies that use observations, modeling, new technologies, or a combination of approaches to quantify impacts of water use on biophysical systems, farmers’ attitudes to climate uncertainty, or the effects of individual management decisions at aggregate scales.
