Session Description:
- There are many challenges for humanity like the dependency on fossil oil and the emission of greenhouse gases and the steadily increasing pollution of water and soil. Biomass can be used for the production of renewable energy sources and other valuable by-products. Biochar is currently applied as a soil amendment while it can be an effective tool for carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems and thus reducing the unavoidable greenhouse gases emissions. Biochar has special properties that make it as a good material for producing cost effective bio-filters for air, and remediation of soil and water. Characterization of biochar using the x-ray computed tomography and three-dimensional elemental imaging is necessary. This session seeks to bring together researcher in AGU Fall meeting to discuss recent update on the characteristics of biochar-derived biofiltration media and performance and economics of applying developed biochar filtration system for the remediation of air, water and soil.
