Session Description:
Amazonia is Earth's most iconic center of biological diversity and endemism and, owing to its contributions to global systems ecology, is arguably Earth’s most important terrestrial biome. Additionally, Brazil’s Atlantic Forest harbors one of the largest percentages of endemic species in the world with new species and genera still being described. This session embraces current research on biodiversity in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. Contributions are welcomed that address characterization and the role of processes through deep time, including climate and geomorphology, that drove the current assemblage of biodiversity, and the influence of climate and land cover conversion on current and future biodiversity. We welcome contributions from fields related to the evolution of these regions’ biomes, such as sedimentology, stratigraphy, neotectonics, geomorphology, paleoclimatology, climate modeling, remote sensing, phylogeny, and biogeography, as well as presentations of new tools or datasets that can be of broad interest to researchers in related fields.
