Session ID#: 13948
Session Description:
U-Pb geochronology plays a central and expanding role in determining the chronology of igneous, metamorphic and tectonic events, sedimentary provenance, and the potential for reliable ages of sedimentation. A variety of analytical instruments (TIMS, SIMS, LA-ICPMS, EMPA) and minerals (zircon, monazite, baddeleyite, rutile, titanite, apatite, allanite, perovskite, hematite, xenotime, calcite, etc) are used. More recently, isotopic ratio tracers and elemental concentrations are measured in the same crystals dated by U-Pb to link timing of geologic events to sources, equilibration temperatures and petrogenetic processes.
This session welcome contributions on (1) reducing analytical uncertainties in U-Pb zircon geochronology by crystal pretreatment (annealing, chemical abrasion), optimization of measurement parameters and data processing procedures, and the use of suitable standard reference materials; (2) analytical developments and geological applications of U-Pb geochronology for minerals other than zircon; and (3) studies that combine U-Pb ages with isotopic tracer and/or elemental concentration data for the same mineral.
