Session Description:
The integrated framework of telecoupling offers a powerful new template to study socioeconomic and environmental interactions over global distances. It has been applied to a number of globally important issues, e.g. land use and land cover change, international trade (e.g. energy, water, food, and forest products), species invasion, flows of ecosystem services, and migration. It allows researchers to address human-nature interactions beyond borders, a situation that can frequently be found in the complex Anthropocene. Its applications and study results have already been shown to produce powerful results across sectors and continents with high impact and buy-in. Here we show how the framework of telecoupling is applied to address fundamental questions across the traditional disciplines. This session will present a representative cross-section of applications, which enable scientists to explore the relevance of telecoupling, why it matters and how the framework helps to gain a better understanding of global, complex real-world processes.
