Session Description:
As Earth’s first technologically-capable planetary species, we have the opportunity to shape the complex, interwoven systems of ‘spaceship Earth’ so as to maintain a ‘safe operating space’ for human civilisation. To do so, we must develop an integrated approach that considers humans as a natural, integral, permanent, and constantly evolving component of Earth’s biogeochemical systems. Pragmatic understanding of this ‘human system’ must be meaningfully integrated with traditional models of Earth physical and biogeochemical systems. This is a daunting challenge that we barely understand and for which we are poorly prepared. This session will bring together natural and social scientists seeking to share the data and perspectives needed to manage Earth’s Future.
