High Mountain Asia's Cryosphere: Systems Dynamics and Hazards I Posters

Session Description:
High Mountain Asia (the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya,

Karakoram, and other nearby high ranges) contains the largest alpine

glaciers in the world and supplies melt water to over one billion people.

Glaciers in this region are governed by a multitude of forcing factors that

are geographically and temporally scale dependent. However, glacier

sensitivity to climate change and mountain geodynamics is poorly

understood. The region’s complex climate-glacier dynamics involve

interactions between climate systems and topography; ablation and debris

cover; glacier lake formation and drainage; mass movement and debris

production, earthquake triggering of landslides; and flooding and sediment

fluxes. Improved scientific understanding of this region is vital to a diverse

user group with interests including: water security, glacial change, and

hazard prediction. In this session, we welcome a broad spectrum of

scientific research on High Mountain Asia including studies on: climate

change, glaciers, seasonal snow, and natural hazards.
