Session ID#: 14789

Session Description:
The ubiquity of iron bearing minerals on Earth and other terrestrial bodies coupled to their acute reactivity to changes in biogeochemical and thermodynamic conditions makes them perfect proxies for and tracers of environmental conditions and change. Advances in instrument sensitivity, multi-disciplinary analyses, and experimental and numerical protocols enable the speciation of magnetic minerals and quantitative estimates of their concentrations and grain sizes. From these data, prevailing conditions in surficial or near-surface environments are being reconstructed, monitored and predicted. The session seeks contributions ranging from the magnetic properties of environmentally significant iron-bearing minerals and their characterization in naturally occurring archives (sediment, rocks, speleothem, ice, bacteria and other biomass), to studies that have led to a better understanding of environmental and anthropogenic change through the Earth’s oceans, lakes, rivers, soils, etc..
