Session Description:
The equatorial trapping of oceanic and atmospheric waves leads to a wide variety of important phenomena within the ocean, atmosphere, and climate system. Equatorial modes are associated with strong air-sea coupling, with different modes of ocean-atmosphere interactions occurring on diurnal-to-centennial time scales. Convectively coupled equatorial waves, including the Madden-Julian Oscillation, drive a large portion of the convective variability on diurnal-to-intraseasonal time scales. In addition to containing unique dynamical structures, the equatorial region can radiate energy to the rest of the tropics and to midlatitudes. Improving prediction of climate depends on a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of this pivotal region. We solicit presentations on all equatorial phenomena, their underlying dynamics, and their climatic impacts.
