Session Description:
Representing convection and precipitation processes in numerical models is crucial to adequately simulate weather and climate.  This is especially evident for phenomena that exhibit organized convection, such as extreme weather events (e.g., tropical cyclones and flooding), tropical climates, and mesoscale convective systems. Of particular interest is the role of organized convection and convective parameterizations in global models as the horizontal resolution approaches non-hydrostatic scales. Organized phenomena share many common features across regions including their relationships with vertical shear, tilted structures, moisture availability and even microphysical properties. Crucially many of these common relationships also hold across scales and could be exploited in parameterization development. Contributions are sought from studies of varying complexity, including work on model and parameterization development, resolution dependence, scale interactions from cloud to synoptic scales, and comparison of simulations to observations.
