Session Description:
One of the major scientific questions in the outer solar system, highlighted in the Visions and Voyages for Planetary Science in the Decade 2013-2022 (U.S. National Research Council, 2013) is: "How Do Satellites Influence Their Own Magnetospheres and Those of Their Parent Planets?" The interaction of Io with the Jovian magnetosphere is among the strongest and most complex known interactions between a satellite and the magnetosphere of its parent body. This session will bring together key researchers on Io's volcanism, atmosphere, torus, and Jupiter's magnetosphere to discuss how best to investigate interrelated observations and models of volcanic, atmospheric, plasma-torus, and magnetospheric mass-and-energy-exchange processes. The ultimate goal of the session is to foster new collaborative research to determine the connection between Io’s volcanic activity and variability in the Io torus and Jupiter’s aurorae, and thus better understand the mechanisms by which Io supplies the Jovian magnetosphere with plasma.
