Session Description:
This session will focus on new theoretical and observational studies of planetary rings, meteoroids, and dust. These objects interact with larger bodies through surface impacts and atmospheric ablation, and are a source of surface weathering on airless bodies and of ionization and metal deposition in planetary atmospheres. Additionally, impacts on spacecraft have affected their operation, from spurious signals produced through sensor interaction to spacecraft anomalies resulting in mission failure. Characterization of planetary rings and the meteoroid and dust population is constrained by the small capture area of in-situ detectors and by limitations of Earth-based sensors such as cameras and radar.
Recent Cassini observations will be highlighted, along with Earth, Moon, New Horizons and HST observations; theoretical models, laboratory results. We are interested in new Juno results, comparisons of Juno and Cassini results expected from Cassini’s Grand Finale and possible dust results that may have implications for future Europa missions.
