Applying Lessons Learned from Established Contaminants to Elucidate the Fate, Impact, and Risk Associated with Technology: Critical Elements and Other Substances of Emerging Concern I Posters

Session Description:
New technologies in the fields of information and communication, semiconductors, electronic displays, ‘green energy’, and medical devices drive the increasing extraction, use and emission of a range of trace elements, including rare earth elements, platinum group metals, Nb, Ta, Ga, In, Ge, Te, and others. Due to limited resources and supplies, they are considered technology-critical elements (TCE) of strategic importance. Because of their increasing use, poorly understood biogeochemical behavior and (potential) toxicity, TCE and some other less studied trace elements can be considered as emerging inorganic contaminants of substantial concern. For this session, we invite presentations concerning natural cycles, anthropogenic emissions, mobility in different environmental compartments and fate of TCE and other emerging inorganic contaminants. This includes, for example, molecular level reaction mechanisms and basic geochemical properties, reactive transport, analytical challenges, field studies on biogeochemical presence, fate transformations and anthropogenic impacts, and potential influences on humans and biota.
