South China Sea: A Natural Laboratory for Investigating Marginal Sea Tectonic, Oceanographic/Paleoceanographic, and Biogeochemical Processes II

Session Description:
The South China Sea (SCS) is the largest marginal sea of the northern Pacific, serving as a natural laboratory for investigating the tectonic interactions of marginal seas with Eurasian, Indo-Australian, and Pacific plates. SCS is critically situated at the gateway between the Pacific and Indian Ocean, moderating climate changes and carbon cycles at multiple time scales. The last several years have witnessed major progress in investigating the SCS through multidisciplinary initiatives and enhanced international collaboration, including IODP Exp. 349 in 2014, IODP Exp. 367/368 scheduled for 2017, and the ongoing “South China Sea Deep” initiative. This session will highlight recent multidisciplinary progress: (1) Tectonic interactions of the SCS with major tectonic plates, and their linkages with sedimentary processes; (2) Sedimentary records and paleoceanography; (3) Physical oceanographic processes of and interaction with the Pacific and Indian Ocean; (4) Biogeochemistry of carbon and nutrients in the SCS and surrounding oceans.
