Session Description:
The Maritime Continent (MC) comprises a complex array of islands and marginal seas stretching across the tropics from Southeast Asia to Australia and bridging the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The MC strongly influences and responds to the global ocean and climate system. Despite considerable recent progress, large gaps remain in our knowledge of the physical and biogeochemical processes that contribute to variability in the coupled air-sea climate system, and subsequently to the marine ecosystem responses within the MC that lies at the heart of the ecologically important Coral Triangle. With the upcoming Year(s) of the Maritime Continent (2017-19) and recent ocean acidification vulnerability assessments, a timely opportunity exists for interdisciplinary modeling and observational studies to inform fieldwork and policy.  This session solicits contributions on all aspects of the atmosphere, ocean, their interaction and the marine ecosystem responses within the MC region across all spatial and temporal scales.
