Session Description:
Over the last decade, high-frequency (HF) radar has become a major platform for coastal ocean observing systems. With high spatial and temporal resolution, HF radar-derived surface currents help scientists to gain new insights into coastal oceanography. The U.S. Coast Guard uses HF radar data and model forecasts assimilated with these data to more effectively plan search and rescue operations. The coastal ocean off the western US is well covered by HF radars while investigators on the east coast are rapidly expanding a regional network there. An international HF radar network is also emerging across Europe, Australia, East Asia, and South Africa. An important goal of this evolving international network is to expand HF radar coverage of world's coastal oceans. This session seeks presentations that address all topics related to HF radar including technology development, data retrieval, processing, calibration and validation, data assimilation and model predictions, and applications relevant to society.
