Session Description:
Turbidity currents are sediment-laden, gravity-driven underflows that usually rapidly move down a slope or through a submarine canyon. Turbidity currents are considered the volumetrically most important sediment transport process, and they form the largest sediment accumulations on Earth. However, because the turbidity currents are extremely rapid and mostly unpredictable deepwater events, observing and understanding their occurrence processes are challenging. Consequently, our understanding of turbidity processes is still limited, and the suspended concentration has never been measured directly in the deep ocean. Numerical modeling is also needed in order to understand field observations and the geological past. This session calls for new approaches on the initiatives of direct monitoring observation, numerical modeling, geological reconstruction, and all other aspects of turbidity current processes.
