Scientific and Technical Advances in Mapping and Characterizing Seafloor Volcanism and Hydrothermal Processes III

Session Description:
More than 70% of the Earth is covered by oceanic lithosphere yet the accretion and subsequent evolution of this lithosphere remains poorly understood. Seafloor volcanism is manifested through oceanic spreading centers, back-arcs, arcs and hot-spot volcanism. These, in turn, give rise to associated seafloor processes that are diverse, complex and integrated, meaning that cross-disciplinary research is essential to understand how these different components interact. Historically data collection has been hampered by the difficulty of making detailed observations of the deep ocean floor and only recently have technological and methodological innovations made it possible to collect comprehensive, detailed datasets. In this session we invite contributions related to the scientific application of these new methodologies to studying processes associated with seafloor volcanism. Scientific findings in volcanic accretion, tectonic extension, hydrothermal cooling and biodiversity as well as interdisciplinary research combining these topics is particularly welcomed.
