Session Description:
Soils are the largest global source of N2O emissions. In cold climates, nitrous oxide emissions are enhanced by freeze-thaw cycles and can be a significant proportion of the annual emissions from soils.  A combination of microbially -driven processes and physico-chemical conditions induced by freeze/thaw cycles are related to enhanced N2O emissions, but the interactions between these key drivers are not well understood. A warming and more variable climate could increase the frequency, duration, and spatial extent of freeze-thaw events in cold climates. Improved knowledge of the extent of freeze-thaw enhanced N2O emissions and driving mechanisms is essential to predicting the impact of climate change on N2O emissions from soils. This session will bring together researchers examining the combination and interaction of microbial and physical mechanisms on N2O emissions during freeze-thaw cycles.
