Session Description:
Deepwater areas of the remote Pacific Islands are some of the least explored areas on earth. From trenches and seamounts to hydrothermal vents and mud volcanoes, the Central and Western Pacific host varied and largely undisturbed ecosystems. NOAA, through its Campaign to Address Pacific monument Science, Technology and Ocean NEeds (CAPSTONE), Schmidt Oceanographic Institute (SOI), and academic partners have made a multi-year investment to investigate these deepwater areas. Baseline characterizations of these areas are required to support science-based decision making. This session will include a discussion of new data and recent discoveries from recent fieldwork in the CAPSTONE region, including NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer and SOI’s R/V Falkor expeditions. Of particular interest are biogeographic patterns; characterization of habitats that could be impacted by deep-sea mining; geographic features revealed in newly available bathymetry data; descriptions of oceanographic phenomena; geologic history of the Pacific seamounts; and identification of unique marine habitats.
