Session Description:
Quantifying soil carbon stocks, fluxes, and vulnerability across large scales—both spatial and temporal—is critical to constraining, projecting and predicting the role of soils in the carbon cycle. Working across large scales requires spatially extensive datasets and long-term re-measurements, but the insights gained using such approaches can be quite powerful as a result of their integration over large scales. At the same time, datasets available to soil carbon researchers have never been larger, and networks of long-term research sites are increasingly accessible through data sharing and collaboration. We intend this session as an outlet for large-scale and long-term studies of soil carbon stocks, fluxes and vulnerability, and an opportunity stimulate new contacts and collaboration on complementary projects. Projects that integrate both large scales and long timeframes are of special interest, as are studies that constrain predictions and projections with observational or experimental datasets.
