Session ID#: 15185

Session Description:
The water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles are intricately linked at the land surface. There are many remote-sensing technologies to measure several components of these cycles over large areas, including locations with limited in-situ coverage. However, several of these technologies are only indirectly linked to the geophysical quantity of interest and significant modeling efforts are required to relate them. Moreover, integration of existing measurements or joint retrieval of components is difficult since current technologies focus on monitoring each cycle separately. Nevertheless, combining multiple observational approaches can potentially be used to constrain retrievals and reduce uncertainties in observed/unobserved geophysical quantities. This session addresses opportunities for improved remote monitoring of the coupled water, carbon, and nitrogen cycle by combining multiple observational techniques with each other, or with modeling approaches. Topics include efforts to integrate observations of these cycles, current barriers hindering routine integration, and design of future observational platforms to address these challenges.
