Session Description:
Serpentinization is a remarkably widespread process that has operated for more than 4 billion years on Earth and elsewhere in the solar system with multifaceted geological and biological ramifications. This interdisciplinary session will bring together novel research on serpentinization and its effects on the geosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. We welcome biochemical, microbiological, hydrological, geochemical, geophysical, and petrological studies of active and ancient, low- to high-temperature, shallow- to deep-Earth serpentinization systems on all spatial and temporal scales, including theoretical models, laboratory experiments, and remote sensing studies. Contributions addressing key aspects of serpentinization that have remained particularly intriguing, elusive or controversial such as the origin of life, (subsurface) habitability and bioenergetics, deep Earth (de)-serpentinization, reaction kinetics, volume changes, deep time chronometry, and extra-terrestrial serpentinization are strongly encouraged.
