Session Description:
Lengthening of the growing season and increasing frequency of extreme climate events are anticipated in coming decades. Continental-scale warming could synchronize phenology, growth, and demography across regions for which seasonal precipitation and temperature variability have normally been anti-phased (e.g., US Pacific Northwest vs. Southwest for winter precipitation; US East vs. West for summer temperature and precipitation; and the US Southeast vs. Northwest for winter/spring temperatures). This session will encompass a broad array of perspectives on ecological synchrony in the context of climate variability and change for understanding and forecasting the vulnerability and resilience of the world’s forests in the coming decades.
