Session Description:
Despite hosting one of the most expansive biospheres on the planet, our understanding of microbial activity in the deep subsurface (including both sediment and crustal ecosystems) remains limited. Recent innovative and interdisciplinary efforts are shedding light on key biogeochemical aspects of these ecosystems, including kinetic and thermodynamic constraints, taxonomic and physiological diversity and potential, syntrophic interactions within communities, and the extent to which their metabolic activity influences global cycling of important elements. The multifaceted datasets emerging from these complementary approaches require regular integration in order to build holistic frameworks for development of ecosystem models. We invite submissions that provide unique insights into microbial community structure, function, and/or activity in the deep subsurface biosphere through the integration and combination of interdisciplinary datasets.
