Session Description:
Plants largely affect the surface energy budget on land via transpiration. Plant hydrodynamics describes water movement within the plant as part of the soil-atmosphere water continuum. Plants dynamically control water movement through the roots, xylem and stomata. Observations provide evidence that the dynamic aspects of within-plant hydraulics play a major role in controlling stomatal conductance and the intensity of water stress and consequent mortality during droughts. These interactions can substantially affect carbon fluxes, and hydrology at the watershed-scale. Understanding and predicting the above-ground water storage within plant canopies is key to interpreting remote sensing hydrological products. Exploiting global hydraulic trait datasets, new modeling approaches that provide physical- and physiological-based representations of plant hydrodynamics are being developed to improve the next generation of land-surface models. In this session we welcome contributions covering both experimental and theoretical work linking plant hydrodynamics, ecology, and hydrology at scales spanning plots to watersheds and beyond.
