Soil Carbon Dynamics: Diving into Our Conceptual and Operational View of Soil Carbon Pools I

Session Description:
Terrestrial carbon (C) dynamics and the fate of the soil C reservoir have emerged as a primary source of uncertainty in Earth system models. In order to quantify and predict soil C storage, stability, and susceptibility to disturbance, a process-level understanding of physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms of soil C stabilization needs to be integrated with terrestrial C cycle models. The USGS Powell Center Working Group on Soil C Stabilization seeks contributions aimed at better understanding the distribution of soil C, particularly as it relates to the diverse mechanisms of stabilization. In particular, we encourage submissions targeting: (1) spatial patterns in the distribution of C in various soil fractions; (2) applications of  methods to assess soil C stability; (3) novel modeling techniques to incorporate various soil C fractions; and (4) identification of  knowledge gaps that hinder model-data fusion.
