Session Description:
The presence and distribution of volatiles (C, O, H, N, S, noble gases, and others) within the Earth’s deep interior may have a profound influence on a multitude of physical, petrological, geochemical and geodynamical processes. The precise mechanisms of volatile cycling between the Earth’s surface and eventual storage in the deep interior remains an open question, necessitating the combined efforts of geochemists, petrologists, mineral physicists, seismologists, geodynamists, and computational geoscientists. This session aims to unite all types of researchers who investigate volatiles in the Earth’s mantle and core. Relevant topics include but are not limited to: study of natural samples from the deep mantle, experimental and theoretical constraints on volatile-bearing phase stability and equations of state, investigations into the origin and cycling of terrestrial volatiles, seismological and geodynamical study of the distribution and influence of deep Earth volatiles, and constraints on the volatile element content of the Earth’s core.
