Session Description:
Fire is one of the main perturbations in the Earth System, strongly impacting the global carbon cycle. Fire in the landscape (wildfires and prescribed fires) accelerates oxidation of carbon from vegetation and soil organic matter, leading to substantial carbon emissions. However, fire also transforms part of the biomass fuel into carbon forms with longer residence times in the environment (charcoal, black carbon, pyrogenic carbon, biochar). Furthermore, fire can lead to alterations in vegetation and soil dynamics.
This interdisciplinary session aims to highlight and address uncertainties in key processes determining the role of fire in the carbon cycle; such as fuel consumption; trace gas and particulate emission factors; pyrogenic carbon production and fate in the atmosphere, soil, sediments and water; and post-fire vegetation and soil dynamics. We welcome contributions from the atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic sciences communities, focusing on small, regional or global scales, and involving lab-, field- or modelling approaches.
