Session Description:
Microwave observations from radars and radiometers are used widely for ground, air and space based remote sensing of clouds and precipitation. The interpretation of these observations is often not straightforward. Determining the scattering properties of the hydrometeors may require involved calculations, especially for icy particles. Even when the scattering properties are known, innovative approaches are typically needed in order to retrieve the desired physical properties from the received signal. This session brings together research that contributes to improving the applicability of microwave sensors to cloud and precipitation science. We invite abstract submissions on advances relating to theoretical scattering models, numerical calculations and retrieval techniques. Abstracts contributing to observational support and validation for these methods are also encouraged, as are studies on methodologies that combine microwave remote sensing with other types of observations.
