Session ID#: 15402

Session Description:
Dead above- and below-ground plant litter and rhizodeposition (e.g., exudates) from living roots are the main organic matter inputs into soil, connecting plant productivity, carbon allocation and community composition with SOM formation. Plant inputs differ in chemistry, structure and location across the soil profile, and their contributions to soil are affected by human and environmental impacts on plant communities. We invite contributions examining how soil environmental factors such as depth, mineralogy, texture, redox state, stoichiometry and soil microbes interact with plant communities to shape the decomposition trajectory and fate of different types of plant inputs to the soil. We encourage contributors to present cutting edge results at the interface between climatic and human induced changes to plant communities, carbon allocation and plant input chemistry with soil physio-chemical and biological controls on decomposition and soil biogeochemistry to advance our understanding of how plants influence soil C sequestration and SOM formation.
