Climate Extremes and Their Implications in Impact Modeling Studies I

Session Description:
Heatwaves and cold spells are responsible for severe impacts to society and ecosystems in many parts of the world. Changes in the frequency, intensity and distribution of such climate extremes under global warming will challenge current adaptation strategies. A wide range of indicators characterizing heatwaves and cold spells or related climate extremes indicators are available in the climate community and are used in impact studies (e.g., human health and heat stress, air pollution, ecosystem services, agriculture, energy, infrastructure). Incorporating climate extremes and related indicators or indices in impact modelling studies remains a challenge. Contributions are welcome, which explore the usefulness and limitations of climate extremes indicators (e.g. Heatwave index) in impact studies; compare impact studies using different climate extremes indicators or applying the same climate extremes indicator to different impacts; address associated uncertainties; and highlight future needs for designing such indicators to meet the requirements for use in impact studies.
