Session Description:
Reducing the vulnerability of coastal environments and increasing freshwater security are critical issues facing society.  A large portion of the world’s population lives in and/or depends on coastal environments.  Populations must deal with complex challenges such as sustainable water use, storms and tsunamis, coastal erosion and sea level rise.

Pressures on water usage across the globe are increasing rapidly and pose mounting challenges for sustainable water management.  Many water-stressed regions are expected to become drier and the increased frequency of extreme events, droughts and floods, may exacerbate the disaster risk to society.

Through international collaborations, such as the Belmont Forum, the global research community is developing transdisciplinary approaches between natural and social sciences and stakeholders to improve understanding of the complex coupling between natural and anthropogenic systems that operate on multiple spatial and temporal scales; and to deliver novel, transferable, approaches to these challenges enabling communities to become more resilient.
